gendance & SYTYCDISM: Michael Jackson Tribute Wall

Hi everyone! We're going to work with gendance this week to put together kind of a tribute wall for MJ, made up of dancers and dance fans' thoughts on the King of Pop.

As fellow dance industry icons and fans, let's celebrate the idol that gave us many of the reasons why we get up everyday and love what we do for dance. Please express your gratitude and prayers to Michael by sharing your thoughts and contributing them to the special wall. The wall will be featured in this coming Thursday's edition of gendance!

A few words are all that is needed! To respond, please email trendme@gendance.com or simply leave a comment (20 words or less, with a name) and I will email them myself!

Thanks for participating, the more the merrier.

If you know a dancer who’s worked with him, or admires the King of Pop, and you know they’ll want to say something please forward this to them and have them email us by Monday. The wall is growing with love and support.

With respect,
SYTYCDISM and gendance

BuddyTV: Interview with Jonathan Platero

BuddyTV just interviewed Jonathan Platero.
This morning I had the pleasure of chatting with Jonathan Platero, the latest dancer to be eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance.

Jonathan, a cute as a button salsa dancer and tumbler, impressed Mary Murphy with what she said was a So You Think You Can Dance first: he performed far better outside of his genre. Despite his early elimination, Jonathan's contemporary routine with Karla to "Falling Slowly," will be remembered as one of the best of the season. (And yes, I feel completely confident saying that three weeks in to the competition.) Ultimately, Jonathan suffered at the unenviable hands of the dreaded partner-less salsa solo, which he tried to spice up with one too many tumbling passes for the judges taste.

Jonathan and I chatted about our mutual adoration for Stacey Tookey's contemporary routine, the closeness of the cast of So You Think You Can Dance, Twitter, and what's next for him.

A SYTYCDism Tribute to Michael Jackson

You might be wondering how Michael Jackson has anything to do with So You Think You Can Dance. Truth is, Michael Jackson has had a near infinite influence on the world, and despite what he may or may not have done with his personal life, most if not all will agree with me that he is the "common denominator for everyone."

I can't even get into how he has affected dance, let alone music, because this post would probably take about a whole semester to write. But within So You Think You Can Dance, the king of pop can be seen from being Jason Glover's (S5) childhood obsession and idol to the movements of Wade Robson's Sexyback season two finale group dance. The influences of MJ can be seen all over SYTYCD, I mean, how many people have done moonwalks on the show?

Even in a random thread made up of SYTYCD fans from across the Americas, Michael Jackson's passing brought us together. All different people of different ages, different backgrounds, different beliefs, posting in unity lamenting over MJ just shows how big of a legacy he has left for this world. Did I mention that Facebook, Twitter, and Livejournal pretty much exploded once the news came out?

There's not much else to say right now, as I think everyone pretty much feels the same way as I do about MJ's passing, so I'll just post up some SYTYCD-affiliated thoughts.

Adam Shankman: Just meditating on the meaning of the three surreal entertainers deaths. Michael, I believe yours and lifes rules were at odds... I pray you finally find peace now.

Comfort Fedoke (S4): MICHAEL JACKSON DESERVES A BREAK FROM MEDIA AND THE WORLD HE IS IN GODS HANDS NOW. I CANT BELIEVE THIS!!! IM IN TEARS NOW! I LOVE YOU MICHAEL WITH ALL MY HEART REST IN PEACE IMA KEEP HIM IN MY PRAYERS AS WELL AS THE WORLD SHOULD THE KING OP POP IS NO LONGER WITH US!

Lacey Schwimmer (S3): Pop will NEVER be the same. RIP MJ<3

Neil Haskell (S3): A very sad day for music fans everywhere ...

Mary Murphy: Michael Jackson just passed away. I am so sad and crying in my dressing room, this will be a hard show to get through tonight .

Napolean and Tabitha D'umo: Sad news about Michael Jackson! VERY SAD.

Hok Konishi (S3): Omg... I can't believe it...

Blake McGrath (S1): Michael jackson will always live as the one like neo incomparable as bad as the come walks on the moon his death is a thriller MJ RIP

Shane Sparks: Today is my birthday and Micheal Jackson dies this is a sad day;(

Jason Williams (S2): Riding down the street BLASTING ALL MJ!!! RIP!!! I can't believe this day!!!

Dominic Sandoval (S3): my heart hurts rite now... dont know what to feel

William Wingfield (S4): Sleep In Peace Michael. U r IV EVER the king!!!

Gev Manoukian (S4): Is speechless, I cant believe that Michael Jackson has passed away today.

Benji Schwimmer (S2): King of Pop's legacy lives on!!!!!

Joshua Allen (S4): THE REASON WHY I EVEN STARTED DANCE JUST PASSED AWAY! I LOVE YOU MICHAEL "AND THATS IV REAL"

Nick Lazzarini (S1): Sad day.....i miss you cross my heart

Travis Wall (S2): Today was a lot. RIP MICHAEL! MAY YOU LIVE FOREVER IN ALL OF US! DEFINATELY THE GREATEST PERFORMANCE ARTIST OF ALL TIME

This is all I can find right now, but I'm sure everyone has their own thoughts around the same point: Michael Jackson will be missed.

Watch the season four cast dance to Thriller by Michael Jackson during their Halloween show on tour.

And here's a clip of Wade Robson back in 1990 on Star Search. I can't even imagine what he is feeling now. The first half of Wade's dance career and what probably even started his dance career was imitating Michael Jackson.

gendance: Behind the Scenes with Max Kapitannikov!

And here's gendance's interview with Maksim Kapitannikov (S5)!

Max Kapitannikov is the lovable Latin Ballroom specialist who just left SYTYCD. Listen up as he tells us about dancing for 12 hours straight and running away from security guards in the middle of the night.

Who are your Latin Ballroom idols?
Bryan Watson. He’s the father. Before him is Donnie Burns. Everyone looks up to him.

Why do you think you got eliminated?
A lot of great dancers were in the Top 18. The guys in the bottom 3 deserved to stay. They bring something different to the show and their personalities are great.

What do you hope America remembers you for?
My hard work and everything I put into the show. I was bringing something different.

Which judges did you like the best?
Nigel and Mary. Their comments gave me something I could take back and work on. I really appreciate that.

Would you have done anything differently during your time on the show?
I thought about it this morning. I said, “Max, you did everything you could.” I feel pretty proud and I have no regrets.

Who was the best choreographer to work with?
Definitely Mia Michaels. She was the one who was really deep and understanding in terms of what dancers really need to bring it to the next level. It’s not just about the dance itself. It’s more about being human. She made a huge impact on my dancing and I’ll never forget it.

Who do you think will win Season 5?
My partner, Kayla Radomski. She’s just very talented. We understood each other in work ethics and the way we approached the competition. I hope she goes all the way and that she opens up even more to America.

Your schedule is so hectic. Do you get to sleep?
For about 5 hours every night. We have Sundays “off”, but it’s up to you to come out and practice on your own. Monday-Thursday is crazy, waking up at 6 am every day. We film the show on Tuesday and everyone’s tired from rehearsing all day Monday. Wednesday we learn group choreography and dance for 12 hours. I never really did these things before, so I had to work harder. I couldn’t sleep because my muscles would hurt so badly. I took a lot of baths with Epsom salt. But I learned how to move in ways I never did before. It was a huge achievement for me.

Any bloopers? Falls, slips, trips?
There were a lot of off camera incidents. We would practice in our apartments, in the hallways until 1 am. We’d run away from the security guards, as they’d yell at us. Then we’d get complaints.

You’re from Brooklyn. Which ballroom hotspots do you go to?
Dance Times Square, (gd shout out to Melanie and Tony!) Ballroom on 5th, Studio 101, Fred Astaire studios.

What's next for you?
I want to stay in the zone. I don’t want to lose this adrenaline rush. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to get out there and take some classes. I’ll take some classes with my girlfriend at BDC. My girlfriend auditioned for Season 6 so I’ll help prepare her.

What words of wisdom do you have for the gendance readers?
If you dance, try to dance as loud as you can with your body, with your mind and with your soul. You can’t be afraid to open up. Once you do, you’ll be able to dance even louder.

Do you wanna give any shout outs to your friends who will compete tonight?
Pono, make sure your room is a mess at least one time. To my partner, Kayla, stay on track and take care of your back. Brandon and Ade, you guys are hilarious. Everyone else, keep up the good work.

gendance: Behind the Scenes with Ashley Valerio!

As we await to find out who is sent home tonight, I thought I'd post the interview gendance had with top 18 eliminee Ashley Valerio (S5)!

Ashley Valerio was one of the most unique contemporary dancers on this season of SYTYCD. Listen in as this 22-year-old LA native tells you about working with Wade Robson and why you should never give up.

Why do you think you were eliminated?
I actually don’t know. At the end of the day, they have to choose somebody and I was the 1 to go.

What do you think you’ll be remembered for?
I was honest. I was myself throughout the whole competition.

With that said, how does your personal style affect your dancing?
I feel like I’m the type of dancer that you either absolutely love or you don’t really care for.

Do you think the other contestants changed during the show?
No, but I think sometimes in front of the camera, personalities change. I haven’t seen anyone change too much though.

What was the hardest part of the show?
Actually, trying to get on it! Trying to make the Top 20 was the hardest. I’d been trying for so long. I auditioned for the 2nd season and didn’t make it through. I came back the next year, made it to the green mile, after that I made it to Vegas, got cut after ballroom and this year I finally made the Top 20.

When you kept making it each week, tell us the feeling you had.
You have to take it day by day. You can’t jump ahead of yourself. After a Thursday goes by, you can’t get too comfortable. You’re back in the same routine the next day. We go to dinner, go to sleep, wake up and rehearse. I didn’t celebrate too much because my mind was so focused on the upcoming days ahead of me.

You went on several press runs. Have you been star struck yet?
I haven’t met many people yet. But, when people would shout my name, it made me blush.

Wade Robson; do tell.
He’s one of the nicest choreographers I’ve ever worked with. A gentle soul, very sweet, very passionate. He really cares. I have so much respect for him.

Which choreographers were your faves?
The 2 people I wanted to work with most were Wade and Mia. They both pulled different things out of me I didn’t know I had.

What was your favorite routine?
It would have to be the Crash Test Dummies and Mia’s piece. I’ve always wanted to dance for Mia and I finally got the opportunity. Last Thursday was amazing. She pulled stuff out of me, the choreography was insane. The Crash Test Dummies was so different. It was more than dancing; it was building a storyline and character.

What’s your advice for gendance readers?
Never ever give up on what you love and what you want. Persistence pays off. I know because it took me a while. I finally made the show. I got to meet the 2 choreographers I dreamed of working with.

Audition tips for SYTYCD?
Know at the end of the day that it’s a TV show. Be personable and be yourself because that’s what America wants to see; a real persona struggling and trying to make it.

What’s next for you?
I’m not sure. I want to keep dancing. I’ll probably go out on more auditions and work my tukkos off.

Your favorite costume from the show was?
Crash Test Dummies. White face and white hair.

Do you get to keep the clothes?
Unfortunately, we don’t get to keep them.

Who became your best bud?
You know, we all became really close with each other. We didn’t have cliques. I could go to any 1 of them and pour my heart out.

What’s been your inspiration?
I’ve been through a lot of hard times. My mom taught me to stay positive and keep going. After what you love, there’s no greater journey than the journey that you go through, the end result is great but getting there is so much better.

The next generation…
Keeps getting better.

Besides dance, you love…
Being a homebody, watching movies, eating popcorn and friends.

Article: Thayne in Footloose

s4's Thayne Jasperson has begun his run in Tuacahn Center for the Arts' Footloose. The show will be on stage until October.

Speaking of local talent, Thayne Jasperson, a returning cast member (Mungojerrie in 2006 "Cats") and a finalist on Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" last summer, will be putting on his dancing shoes as Ren in "Footloose" — a stage adaptation based on the popular '80s film.

"He just brought the house down in preview," Anderson said. "He's great..."

Cat Deeley Blogs About Top 20 Week!

Every week, host Cat Deeley will be blogging about her thoughts on the performances and behind-the-scenes tidbits for Entertainment Weekly. Here's an excerpt from this week's post:

It's not easy finding bona fide stars! But...by George...I think we've done it!

The first studio show of So You Think You Can Dance went out on Wednesday, followed by the live results show on Thursday. What an exciting week! Our Top 20 for season 5 are truly amazing. The dance talent is incredible in all the different genres, they're a fun and vivacious bunch, and all of them have done pretty well in the gene pool -- I think they may be our most visually pleasing Top 20 yet!

Elimination Predictions
SYTYCDism's Picks: Tony Belissimo and Paris Torres

Discuss amongst yourselves! I won't be able to live blog tonight guys, have some family errands to do, but hopefully Alanna gets my message and will be able to make it!

Top 20 Polls: Who is going home tonight?!

The polls only let me put nine answers, so I took out who I'm positive won't be eliminated. For the boys I chose Brandon and for the girls I chose Kayla.

Please choose based on how they did during their performance and who the judges would pick, not who you dislike the most.

SYTYCDism Games: Guess The Top 20

I'm bored and I want to play a game.

Here's the deal: guess the top 20 partners (if you already know them don't cheat!) and for every one you get right, you get a point. We'll add up the points once the partners are revealed, and then I'll post the point rankings. You can also include what dance styles you think they'll get and get an extra point.

Winner obviously understands and knows SYTYCD way too much!

For future weeks, we'll guess the dance style.

Go!

Spoilers: Top 20 Performance Show

Guess who's back with your favorite spoilers? ;)

Click View Full Post!

We were pretty accurate with Top 20 spoilers, cuts, and what not so let's home we keep up this track record for reliable information!

Partners

Janette Manrara and Brandon Bryant!
Ship ideas: Jandon, Brandette
What I think: We haven't seen Brandon do much ballroom yet, but he probably won't be that bad at it. Janette has good contemporary experience under her belt, so if the producers throw Mia or Wade at them the first week, they will surely do well. An IDFer just mentioned that Brandette is like a producer's attempt to recreate Danya (Danny Tidwell and Anya Garnis). Brandon got the DTidz treatment and well, Anya and Janette are both ballroomesque, albeit Anya being international Latin and Janette being salsa.

Evan Kasprzak and Randi Evans!
Ship ideas: Evandi, Ranvan?!
What I think: America doesn't really know Randi that well thus far, so partnering her up with Evan is a smart move, since he obviously has a fairly strong early fanbase.

Phillip Chbeeb and Jeanine Mason!
Ship ideas: Philline, Jeanillip
What I think: Strong hip hop dancer with a strong contemporary dancer -- I guess. Word on the street is that Jeanine has hip hop this week, and with Phillip that might just be a good thing.

Vitolio Jeune and Asuka Kondoh!
Ship ideas: Asukilo, Vitoluka
What I think: Those some cool exotic ships, but I guess that's what happens when you have an Asian and a Haitian. I like Vitolio, and I think his personality is great. I'm on the fence about Asuka, though.

... I'll let you guys get a little more antsy before I post more.

Dances

I don't know her partner yet but Kayla Radomski pulled the samba out of the hat this week. Of course, there's really only one card in there. LOL

FYI: I don't have all of them yet. Haha

E! Online interviews the Top 20

The cast seems to be getting along quite well this season! The interviewing of pairs is tripping me out because I feel like they're just telling us who are partners, but my sources say otherwise. I'm so confused!

Now that you've met the So You Think You Can Dance top 20, we have an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at their first photo shoot, along with a sneak peek at the dance moves they're bringing to the stage this year.

The newest batch of dancers spills which dance styles they're terrified of and which choreographers they're most looking forward to, along with a few secrets America doesn't know about them yet.

Plus, the resident naughty ballerina, Melissa Sandvig, sets the record straight on her, well, naughtiness. Brandon Bryant also talks more about how he plans to make amends with choreographer Mia Michaels, and we find out what the thought of ballroom makes Vitolio Jeune want to do. Warning: It's graphically hilarious.
Source

Highlights:

Karla Garcia has a killer penché. Maksim Kapitannikov admits to using Faina to get him in the spotlight -- LOL.

Brandon Bryant talks about his rough surface with Mia Michaels.

The dancers' fears:
Caitlin Kinney and Jonathan Platero fear hip hop. Evan Kasprzak fears Latin ballroom while Jeanine Mason fears hip hop. Ade Obayomi fears Bollywood. Asuka Kondoh and Maksim Kapitannikov fear krumping. Ballroom makes Vitolio Jeune want to poop in his pants. Ashley Valerio also fears Latin ballroom because of the hip movements. Karla Garcia fears the waltz!

Memorable quote:
"America doesn't know that I am a fan of The Hills. Once Heidi and Spencer started fighting, I got into it. I don't know why or how, but it did become one of my favorite shows." - Ade Obayomi

The videos to the interview are available at E! Online. There wasn't an embed tool so I couldn't just post it on here. Sorry about that!

News: Lauren Gottlieb loves SYTYCDism!

Something different came up in our email today! Season three's Lauren Gottlieb wrote us an email telling us that everything's looking great. What a surprise!

Here's her email:
Hey guys!

Much congratulations on your site!!! Everything looks so great...has come so far over the last couple of years!

Hope everyone is doing great and is excited for the new year (well...in sytycd years ;). I just met the cast today and they're all SO excited. Gonna be a great season!

xoxo!!

Lauren Gottlieb
Though I'm not sure what she meant by the last couple of years, considering we've been online for less than a year, but she is so sweet for writing us! She just met the cast, I wonder if she will have anything else to do with production this season. Nonetheless, SYTYCDism loves Lauren Gottlieb and apparently she loves us too!

It was such a sad goodbye for Alex Wong.

Alex wrote me earlier: I'm hoping that one day I'll have a chance to return to the show, and hopefully you'll still support me if that day comes!

I can't wait to see him come back, and I can only expect him to be even better when he does!
