Mark Kanemura Interview

The Moniter just posted an interview that they did with Mark Kanemura (s4) while he was rehearsing in LA for the SYTYCD tour last month. Here's a taste of what you'll be reading!

-------------------------------------------

TM: What did you do while you were home?

MK: It was nice. I got to go to the beach and get some color . . .I ate out a lot. There's a lot of good ethnic food back home. I took advantage of everything.

TM: Did people recognize you on the street?

MK: Yeah, I got recognized everywhere I went. I got to thank people personally for their support, so that was really, really nice. That was awesome.

TM: Your tour swings through New Hampshire in November. Have you ever been to New Hampshire before?

MK: No, I haven't. One of the things I'm excited about is seeing different parts of the country.

TM: It's probably going to be cold here in November.

MK: Uh-oh. That's going to be tough.

Q&A with Mary Murphy

If there's one word to describe Mary Murphy, it would be "loud," although she would probably rather we go with "enthusiastic." The So You Think You Can Dance judge has become known for the high-pitched scream she emits when she's impressed with a dance performance - and she's often impressed.
Still, as a championship ballroom dancer, Murphy knows what it takes to really succeed in the business, which is why she's currently in Toronto to serve as a guest judge on this week's episode of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. She took a few minutes to tell us how Canadian dancers differ from American dancers, what it will take to win the competition and why she thinks the show is such a hit.

--------------
Q: In your opinion, what moves a dance routine beyond good to making you yell, "WOO!"
A: [Laughs] Well, I think most of the time, usually, if I scream, it usually happens with a really fired-up number; sultry and sexy and hard-hitting and very dynamic, very dramatic. That usually gets me on my feet. A lot of times I look back sometimes because I know some of the dancers would have liked a scream. Over the last few years when a number has really touched me, and it did go beyond, you know, it was absolutely perfect, the technique was fabulous - like I said, it takes you to a magical place - I was sad sometimes because I couldn't get a scream up for that because it touched me so much, it leaves me sitting there. I can barely move sometimes. It brings me to tears. But they deserve every ounce of all my enthusiasm. Most of them know that I really, really loved it and adored it, but it takes you to a different place.

MySpace Update: Hok Konishi

Season 3's Hok Konishi just posted a pretty cool blog. No real updates, but he's definitely a thought-provoking fellow.

vision

you open your eyes,

to see the world in front of your eyes.

you close your eyes,

to see the world inside your mind.

sometimes it just makes me wonder,

which is the "real" world?

what does it mean to "see" something?

am i to believe what my brain tells me that i see from my eyes?

or am i to believe what my brain tells me is inside?

....

sometimes it just makes me wonder

Courtney and Twitch Interview

Cincinnati.com interviewed s4's Stephen "Twitch" Boss and Courtney Galiano while they were on tour. Here's a snippet of the interview:

------------------------------------
Q: What's a typical day on the tour like?

Galiano: Every two or three days we have a day off, which we need because it's hard on our bodies. We're night owls, so we don't get to bed until 3 or 4 in the morning. At 1:30 p.m., we meet in the lobby and do press from 3-4, then a group rehearsal and stretching from 4-5, dinner, then we're ready to start the show at 7. Right after, we get dressed and get notes from the producers, do meet-and-greets, then go sign autographs and get on the bus around 1:30 in the morning. But it never gets old.

Q: Do you ever bring audience members up to the stage to teach them a move, or do they start dancing in the aisles?

Boss: They can stand up and dance, which they definitely do, but we've never had anyone run up on stage yet. People get really into it, though. By the end they're dancing and running around.

Dance, dance, and dance: A review from Cincinnati

You don’t need a Nielsen ratings book to assume the television series “So You Think You Can Dance” appeals to women more than men. The crowd at the Bank of Kentucky Center Friday night gave it away.

A nearly full house populated mostly by females came out to see the touring version of the TV show, which is an “American Idol”-style amateur competition complete with the requisite straight-talking English judge.

The road version features top finishers from the recently completed fourth season of the show. Joshua Allen, the Season Four winner, highlighted the troupe of 13 dancers that included other crowd favorites like “Twitch” Boss, Kherington Payne, Mark Kanemura and Comfort Fedoke. The crew performed nearly 40 routines in various configurations, mostly solo pieces and in pairs.

Katee Shean sick and/or injured?

EDIT 10/25: smilesunshineex3 at IDF: Katee performed last night! She did most of the dances, the only ones that she didn't perform were the opening number, the group Bollywood, and Mercy (Kherington Payne filled in again). When she talked to us outside she said she was feeling better, just came off of an injury, and will be dancing fully soon.

EDIT 10/16 CONT: Sammysoowho received a message from Gev stating that Katee pulled some muscles in her back and neck quite severely, and is currently getting treatment for it. Sometimes after the treatment she is very sore, which could be why she didn't perform in the show at Kansas City, Missouri.

EDIT 10/16: Katee did not perform in any dances in Kansas City, Missouri last night. We heard that she only came out for the freestyle intro and introduction, and throughout the show she mainly did introductions for the dances. She wasn't at the barricades to greet the fans either, as Joshua said she wasn't feeling well. Everyone please pray for Katee.

Viewers and fans have reported to SYTYCDism that Katee Shean (S4) has gotten sick or injured. As to the extremities, we're not sure yet, but we do know that in the Grand Prairie show in Texas, Katee did not perform her solo, the pas de deux with William Wingfield (S4), or her 2-3 dances with Joshua Allen (S4) in Grand Prairie.

Fans in Houston asked Katee about the missing dances, and they found out that there was a fall during rehearsals the day before, so for precautionary measures they took Katee out of those dances. But in any case, our prayers are for Katee and that she gets better soon!

We did hear that they extended intermission a bit to compensate for time. A Twitchington broadway was added in the Houston show and Katee was able to do her solo for Houston as well.

If anyone has anymore information, please don't hesistate to comment!

P.S. - I'm starting to think they should've brought more alternates with them (i.e. Matt and Kourtni). Just a thought.

EDIT:

Mark Kanemura and Chelsie Hightower's Kiss Kiss jazz routine, Twitch Boss and Kherington Payne's Too Darn Hot broadway, and Jessica King and Will Wingfield's Alone contemporary dance was added to the set. I guess they finally heard all the Marksie fans complain!

Benji Schwimmer Hits the SYTYCDC Stage

Official press release:

Canada's Top 16 can waltz and hip-hop and even krump, but can they schwim?

Winner of Season 2 of So You Think You Can Dance in America, dancer-turned-choreographer Benji Schwimmer came up to Toronto to share his ballroom moves with Canadian audiences.

"The show was really good on Wednesday night," he says. "I think it was the strongest of the last three for sure!"

Amazing Personality

Where dance skill and technique is a vital component to success, during Season 2 of the American show, the judges often said that though Schwimmer was not necessarily the best technical dancer, his explosive personality and compelling performances set him above the rest.

During Season 3, Schwimmer was the first So You Think You Can Dance alumni to choreograph for the show. His high-energy west coast swing number got a standing ovation from the audience and the judges.

MySpace Update: Jaimie Goodwin

Here is Season 3's Jaimie Goodwin's latest MySpace update. (Paragraph breaks are mine to make it easier to read. She mentions Alli - Season 2's Allison Holker - and Season 3 winner, Sabra Johnson.)

Hellloooo ALLL!!!! Welcome to MY space... I'm here to update you on my life and where I'll be. WOOP WOOP!.... First off...LIFE.... life is a rollercoaster. I flipping LOVE rollercoasters. I've been training a bunch to get back into audition/work mode. There are so many roads to be taken, it's all about the right timing. So i'm focusing now on feeling out where I wanna be and doing whatever it takes to get there :)

In Fact this summer I had an urge to broaden my horizens. I'm going to COLLEGE!!!... I've already started... But dont worry. I'm taking ALL my courses online, nothing is gonna get in the way of the joy i feel when i dance! But I do love this learning thing. I know at first I said I would be majoring in creative writing/journalism but i've changed my mind. I'm now majoring in sports medicine. The way I see it. I can write in my spare time, i can write a book whenever i want... Without a degree. I figured majoring in sports medicine would be beneficial to my dance career and also to others if I ever wanted to do it when I got older!

P.s. I saw HSM3 and It's actually pretty FANTASTIC!! Once a wildcat always a wildcat!!! moving on....

I'm doing a lot with NYCDA and The Movement over the next couple months. For those of you that don't know Alli, Sabra and I teach Girlfrenzy at NYCDA and we assist a bunch of phenomenal teachers. And The MOVEMENT is a cool new convention that a bunch of us SYTYCDers teach at!! COME VISIT!!!

Oct.23rd-25 NYCDA in Salt Lake City!
Oct 26th The Movement in Detroit!
Nov 2nd The Movement in Boston!
Nov9th The Movement in Pittsburgh!
Nov 14-16 NYCDA in Los Angeles!
Nov 23rd The Movement in Cleveland!
Nov 24th I get my wisdom teeth taken out, all for of them. that has nothing to do with dancing i'm just nervous.
Dec 5-7 NyCDA in Boston!
Dec 12-14 NYCD in Nashville!
DECeMBER 25.... CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Austinist interviews Courtney and Gev

Austinist.com put up an interview that they did with season 4's Courtney Galiano and Gev Manoukian. Here's a taste of what you'll be reading:

-------------------------------------

As far as the show goes, which partner did you learn the most from?

Courtney: I think Gev, to be honest. Just because I feel—it's not even a matter of what you learn the most, who you learn the most from. It's...

[Gev interrupts: Who you're in love with?]

[Laughs.] I kind of just feel like everyone has a very special bond to their first partner. You've just been through so much with your first partner and you were with them for so long that they become like your husband, your boyfriend, your brother, your father.... They have so many different hats because you went through so much together. You experience so many different things and so many different emotions together. So, I'd have to say, Gev.

Marksie and Grassy: Bleeding Love Dance Mix

Some self promotion going on here, but I just finished this dance mix of both SYTYCD Australia's and SYTYCD US's Bleeding Loves. I hope you guys enjoy it; think of it as an extended version of the dance. It's essentially just both dances put together. Note, I did not do this to compare the dancers/dances, but I did it because I love both of them! Dancers include Australia's Graeme Isaako and Kassy Lee and America's Chelsie Hightower and Mark Kanemura.

Comments are appreciated on the video as well as here! :*

Spotted: Jaimie at HSM3 Premiere

I was digging around for High School Musical 3 premiere pictures from yesterday's premiere in Los Angeles, and the only shot I got was from somebody's BlackBerry phone via flickr.

I think the curly-haired girl is season three's Jaimie Goodwin, but of course I can't confirm that until I see a picture from the front or if Jaimie tells me that is what she was wearing.

Haha, what do you guys think? Comment whether or not you think it is her!

EDIT: Oops Tara, I did not realize Jaimie uploaded a picture of her at the premiere! Now I'm pretty sure it's her!

Here's Jaimie with Denise Wall!

Interview with Twitch

Sara Boyd, from the Gannett Wisconsin Media sat down with Twitch Boss (s4) to talk about SYTYCD and what his plans are after. Here is a clip of the interview:

Q. Now on to the tour, which began Sept. 20. How's it been going?

A. It's been going awesome. It's fun, a lot of fun, just performing for a totally different group of people every night that's equally excited to see you. Every night, it's somebody's first time seeing the show. It's always new and exciting, and we're trying to find new and exciting ways to push the envelope of the show and just make it better and better. So I feel like it's always a work in progress.

Q. What can fans expect from the tour?

A. We're doing all the favorites from the show and then everybody does a solo. Also … (audiences) get to know us a little bit better because we talk through the entire show. It's us that's hosting. It's us introducing each other. I think people really get a chance to see our personality come through a little more. The show is jam-packed.
